Wool Scouring

Scouring wool is the process of removing dirt, grease and other contaminants and impurities from raw fleece, preparing it for further processing into yarn or fabric. It involves washing the wool in warm water with detergent and rinsing it thoroughly.

AWP’s approach to the successful scouring of greasy raw wool ensures that it effectively removes almost all the different types of contaminants while minimising entanglement of the fibres and felting.

The result is a reliable, strong, high quality and easy-to-use fibre that can be processed to individual and exacting specifications.

Wool Carbonising

Wool carbonising is the chemical process of immersing wool in a light sulphuric acid bath to remove cellulosic vegetable matter such as burrs and seeds.

When dried and baked at high temperature, the acidified vegetable matter transforms into a brittle carbon form that is then crushed and de-dusted to leave the wool free from contaminants.

AWP’s advanced carbonising plant and specialised processing technology, backed by experienced and knowledgeable teams, allows for the carbonising of all grades and types of wool to deliver an end product with a reputation for cleanliness, superior fibre strength and consistency.

Raw Wool Grease

A wax secreted by the sebaceous glands of sheep, wool grease is recovered by AWP during the wool scouring process before being refined into lanolin and cholesterol. Lanolin is used in a variety of cosmetics and pharmaceutical applications when of top quality and in areas like anti corrosives and leather treatment when of a lower grade.

Cholesterol, in turn, is used to produce Vitamin D3, essential for calcium absorption to build and maintain strong bones. It also plays a role in immune function, helping the body fight off infections.

AWP’s wool grease is an increasingly valuable by-product with a growing reputation for its quality.
